and her cell phone records. they tell us that her last tweet was on 6:23 on friday morning. they have 30 detectives working on this plus a task force. they are making this one of their top priorities finding her. detectives went back to the neighborhood where sierra was last seen. they went door to door reinterviewing neighbors to see if they saw anything suspicious. >> they asked if i heard anything, if i saw anything. no it's a quiet neighborhood. >> if i wasn't happening to looking out the window, nobody else would be seeing anything out here. it's not remote but it's rural and there's little traffic that goes by. >> reporter: her cell phone was found in a field less than a mile away but in the opposite direction of her school rout. police have been contacting sexual offenders. sierra's father is a registered

7.4 magnitude earthquake hit this afternoon. it shows a pedestrian bridge collapsed on to an empty bus. and about 200 miles from the epicenter in mexico city. the quake created panic. people there still remember the deadly quake in 1985 that killed 10,000 people. no major damage was reported in mexico city today but as many as 800 homes sustained damage closer to the e picenter. here in the area, people with family members in mexico are relieved to hear that the damage was not as bad. the mexican general council in san francisco tells ktvu there is a possibility -- >> we are waiting for official information. gradually it's coming. fortunately in general terms there are no victims at this

point. >> telephone service was down in parts of mexico city for a time making it difficult for people here in the bay area to reach family members there. most of that phone service has since been restored the polls closed just an hour ago in illinois but mitt romney is the apparent winner in that state's primary. right now with 19% of the precincts reporting, romney leads former pennsylvania senator rick santorum 55% to 28%. newt gingrich is third followed by ron paul. a woman from san jose who cares for hundreds of exotic birds at her home is facing a show down tonight with city hall. only on 2, robert handa live in san jose with a look inside the hobby that city hall is calling a business. robert. >> reporter: well we are at the house and inside a room where many of the exotic birds are kept and where hundreds have

lived for the past decade. now complaints have led that woman into a battle with city hall. linda stewart has names for the exotic birds that fill her home and yard. there are hundreds of colorful birds. and she says their health proves of how well she cares for the birds. >> i have a girl over there, she's 30 years old. if i wasn't doing it right i don't think she would still be with us. >> reporter: but agencies don't agree. a bird rescue group called the living conditions filthy, overcrowded and noisy. stewart says she's had up to 400 birds here and with family support it's not too many. >> if you have enough people coming in and help you with the taking care of everything, absolutely nothing. i know people who have 6,000. >> reporter: officials told me there is no regulation on the number of pet that is can be

kept as pets but stewart has been told that she cannot breed any of the birds. stewart says that she has to sell some of them to pay for expenses. >> the city has been coming to people like mist and trying to shut us down for one reason or another. most people leave because they just can't stand the harassment any longer. >> reporter: but city code enforcement says it will send a compliance order to stewart tomorrow. if stewart decides to fight the order she will face fines and penalties that may have to be resolved before a citizen's appeal board. robert handa, ktvu news. four people pleaded not guilty today to misdemeanor charges stemming from an occupy protest at uc berkeley. three students students and an

alumni are being charged. they are being barred from campus expect for class. >> these are absolutely politically motivated charges that we're demanding be dropped now. >> the alameda county attorney's office woud not comment on this case. the safe sf ordnance would require police officers who work with the fbi joint terrorism task force to be subject to local oversight. supporters say they've received complaints from people who claim they were questioned about seemingly legal activities. we've seen throughout the country that the fbi has sent informants into mosques to record people's conversations. we've seen that agents will open up investigations without any reasonable suspicion. >> the ordnance is up for a second vote next week before it goes to mayor ed lee. san francisco police chief greg

suhr wants the mayor to veto it. parents who's children attend a san francisco school have rallied to keep that school open. the oakland school board voted last october to close it and four other schools to deal with a budget shortfall. >> in the last 10 years, every single school, the school board has closed down has been african american or latino. >> the oakland school district has planned to close as many as 30 more schools but then changed course saying the additional closures were not necessary. state lawmakers today diskraoeubed ways of how to close -- today described ways of how to close gaps. lawmakers also discussed the effective one year reprieve

year-old personal training disappeared a week -- trainer disappeared a week ago. jeff pritchett spoke to the man's wife. >> reporter: jeff cohler has chris crossed this country. he's a 68-year-old man who does not show his age. >> if anyone is going to get lost and then found it's george because the man is an iron man. >> reporter: his wife prudy says there are no answers. he was with a cycling group on a tour of death valley national park. prudy says her husband was at a campfire with friend, walked away to go to sleep but apparently never made it to his tent. >> his bicycle was there. was left at the camp. >> reporter: a massive search effort has been under way since tuesday. no sign of kohler's trail.

because of the prestige of being part of that block buster ipo for facebook. google has hired the founder of dig, kevin rose to try to revive its website google plus. the web giant paid up to $15 million to buy rose' latest company named milk. we reported on rose on the success of dig in 2006. but since then that site has faded in popularity. california should tighten regulation of a pesticide. some people recently reported irritated eyes and lungs when it was sprayed on near by fields. the pesticide action network says it found levels four to five times higher than is considered safe for human health. the san lorenzo river has been redirected away from the historic beach boardwalk. it's a story we've been following with live reports since last wednesday.

upper 60s. as we get into the weekend. we have rain in the forecast especially on saturday. overnight lows are in the 40s. cloudy tonight, i don't think we'll see much frost. the system i'm tracking right now sort of twofold. here's a system here. this is the leading edge of it. this slides through tomorrow on thursday. that opens the door for the next system which is building in the gulf of alaska as we speak. that is the bay area weekend system that has some legs. that thing looks like it's going to drop. a low pressure center drops down. starts on saturday and looks like it lingers through sunday. the long range computer model, thursday morning. this slides through thursday morning it will deposit some light sprinkles. that's your thursday morning commute. not a gully washer but kind of wet out there. and then you get into thursday

the owners of a dog suspected of attacking a woman and killing her dog have now been sited and fined. it's a story we first brought you sunday. kim ferguson says a 90-pound dog killed her 20-pound poodle as they were walking in their san francisco neighborhood last month. police say it was an anonymous tip that led them to the dog's owner yesterday who says the dog is now in gilroy at obedience school. the owners were sited for having a dog off leash that attacked a person. they went through large hurdles to track the dog down because

of a dog mauling last year. the police department says it's not taking any chances anymore. the question really is where was he -- was alex smith really going to go. alex smith and the niners agreed to a knewen contract today. so alex smith will be back for the 49ers for his eighth consecutive season. peyton manning stood with owner bolen and elway. peyton says if there was a game on sunday he could play. manning becomes the highest paid quarterback. >> you know it'll be speculated on and debated for months to come whether it was the right decision or not. i'm going to go out and make it
